mixed berry breakfast smoothie.

my most recent obsession is fruit smoothies. i have a hard time getting up early enough in the mornings to get ready, make breakfast, AND eat it before heading off to work, so i've started making smoothies in the morning to take on the go and it has changed my life. okay, so that might be a little dramatic, but it has definitely changed my mornings. breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so i hear, and consistently getting breakfast in each day makes me feel so much better.  also, i was finding it difficult to get in all my fruits and dairy each day (veggies are a whole different issue in themselves...i mean, have y'all looked at the food pyramid lately? we are supposed to be eating a boat load of fruits and veggies every day.) having a smoothie every morning gets my fruit and dairy consumption off to a great start.

i love drinking a smoothie for breakfast in the mornings because it is healthy, tasty, and filling! confession: sometimes i'll make myself a smoothie in the evening as my dessert. it's definitely a healthier option than ice cream (which i would eat all day every day if that were okay.)

WHAT YOU NEED
-- frozen blueberries
-- frozen raspberries
-- frozen strawberries
-- 1 banana
-- a handful of spinach
-- 1 tablespoon of flax
-- 1/2 - 3/4 cup of yogurt (i use organic vanilla yogurt)
-- 1/2 - 3/4 cup of milk (i use almond milk or organic milk...depending on the day)

add everything into the blender. i recommend adding the items in the order they are listed. i feel like the blender chops up the fruit best when it's at the bottom.  i blend once, stir to make sure everything's mixed, and blend one more time. then pour and enjoy!

WHAT IS YOUR BREAKFAST GO-TO?

Oh this looks SO good! I also make a chocolate-banana smoothie similar to this after I work out. It is Dark Chocolate Almond milk, 1 frozen banana, almond butter all blended up and it is SO good! Thanks for sharing this smoothie!

Can you taste the spinach?

oh YUM. i may have to give that one a try!

Megan McIlvaine said...

yay!! yeah, i figured i should throw in some other things that are good for me, and you can't taste the spinach or flax!

Megan McIlvaine said...

whaaaaat. you should blog those homemade cliff bars! i want to make them! :)

yum, this looks delicious. i need to get back into a smoothie routine, you're so right - it can completely change your morning to have a good breakfast, even if you're short on time. do you use regular flax seeds, or ground flax? (stopped by from Jack of All Trades!)

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I always get up early enough to make oatmeal topped with fresh seasonal fruit and to enjoy it in my kitchen while reading the SheReadsTruth devotional of the day. I love smoothies too but usually have them around 4p as my afternoon snack :D

Yum! Don't you just love breakfast smoothies?! They're basically the best!

This looks delicious! I love how spinach can "hide" in fruity smoothies. With all of that yummy fruit, I know you can't taste the tiniest bit of it! Great recipe!

This sounds so delicious but I have to know, do you find yourself feeling tired and hungry earlier than you would normally feel because of the amount of sugar? I would love to change my morning bfast routine but I am always afraid to try smoothies because of the sugar.

Cheers,
Alyson

Smoothies are my jam! I really just wanted to type that! I have been working on making smoothies a part of my routine... for like a million months. I'm going to get this going one day! I'm determined!

Yum! That looks amazing. Smoothies always look fantastic and I always want to be a smoothie person, but I just never think to make them.

I should! Ha! Now to remember to do it. In the mean time... it's really easy. 1 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup honey, 2 cups rolled oats all mixed up, adding in your toppings (whatever and however much you want). Then I roll mine in little balls in my hands and put them in tupperware in the fridge. That turns them into the consistency that clif bars have. Beware though...they're slightly addictive!

i'm going to sound like a broken record.
but that is basically my morning smoothie too (although i add protein powder, normally no yogurt, and my reliv stuff)

Love this! Minus the banana it's very similar to my go-to smoothie!

Megan McIlvaine said...

i use ground flax!

Megan McIlvaine said...

oh yum, that sounds like a delicious breakfast!

Megan McIlvaine said...

yes ma'am! i'm sipping on one right this minute :)

Megan McIlvaine said...

exactly! can't taste it at all!

Megan McIlvaine said...

nope! not at all. i like to get my fruit in in the mornings anyways, so putting it all in a smoothie works great for me. plus, those are all natural sugars. the additional sugars come from the yogurt and milk, but those things are already a part of my diet as well to get in my dairy and calcium. you can always substitute other things for your yogurt and milk too if you don't want those additional sugars. :)

Megan McIlvaine said...

hahaha. jam. that's amazing. girl, you should do it. they are so delicious!

Megan McIlvaine said...

it seriously takes only 5-10 minutes for prep time and clean up! super easy :)

Megan McIlvaine said...

twins!!! haha.
i've thought about adding protein powder but i haven't done that yet.
